Driving in Port au Prince…

Traffic is horrible in Port au Prince. If I have to go to the city twice a day, my day is mostly gone by the time I get back to the guest house. It could take up to 1 hour and 30 min to get to the airport. Yesterday, I completely forgot that there was another person arriving in the evening.  I let go Mathieu, our travel officer earlier but, luckily, I remembered and had to do a pick up myself. It was 15 min left until the arrival. I got my driver and we took off as fast as we could. There was no way I was going to make it on time at this hour. I asked my driver if he knew any shortcuts to the airport. He said yes, but he had to stop many times to ask people where to go. However, he was able to get me to the airport in 25 min!! Most of the roads he took where barely good for one car to pass by. Here is a photo of one of the roads we took:

Today, I spent most of my day in the car — going to the customs to get clearance on some arriving shipments, etc. Roads are not so safe these days. I had to witness loitering in the middle of the day, in the middle of the street, and on a busy road. There was a huge traffic and cars were stalled for  along time. I saw people attacking a container truck, pulling out medicine, food,  and other supplies from the container. I don’t know how they got the container to open — the containers are usually locked. There were only few people at the beginning but a huge crowd was running down the hill towards the truck. We stopped for a little but took off when we saw all these people approaching . I managed to take a snapshot of what was happening:
